archive of the Jewish Community of Szeged
Preparatory works
The Szeged Jewish Community has a significant number of documents in its archives. Unfortunately, many documents have been lost and destroyed over the years since the establishment of the community in 1785. We keep many different types of documents, such as synagogue construction plans, quotations, collection sheets, private correspondence, petitions, charitable foundations, wills, resolutions, minutes, registration booklets and files, cult tax records, documents of other congregations, etc.
Our important goal is to digitize these remaining documents, i.e. the entire archive of the Szeged Community of Believers, and then retouch the damaged old documents and synagogue textiles. In addition to the excavation work, this work is also important for the preservation of the archives.
We are currently voting on the digitised documents, photos, drawings, blueprints and other written documents that have been digitised so far, so the range of documents that can be searched online is growing.
Our archives have been an important resource for the publication of our periodical, which was launched in 2016, and will continue to be so in the course of our current work. Our archives, together with our library's holdings of Judaica and attribution prayer books, are a very useful resource for genealogists, thesis writers and researchers. It is also an excellent source of specific information for, for example, those in higher education. Our congregation supports the establishment and work of the Society of Family Studies Szeged, which was founded in February 2017.
One of the so-called consular rooms in the building of the Jewish Community of Szeged at Gutenberg u. 20 is used for research and for storing documents.
